SPIKE TIRES

SPIKING INSTEAD OF BIKING

Well studded over icy roads: With studded tires, your bike rolls over icy surfaces as if on rails - so even mirror-smooth road surfaces lose their terror for cyclists. Schwalbe offers various studded tire models for everyday and off-road use.

WELL SPIKED OVER ICY ROADS

If a car slides on a slippery road, it loses track safety. Good winter tires can help against this. But if a bicycle slides on an icy road, the rider loses his balance - and falls. No winter tires can help against this, but only the firm interlocking with the slippery surface - and only spikes can do that. They bite into the icy surface and thus give the rider grip when riding and braking. Bicycle tire manufacturer Schwalbe even tested its studded tires in a bobsled run and came to the conclusion: "On two wheels, there is only full control with spikes." This is now provided by three studded tire models in a total of 21 sizes and designs.

Traction in everyday life and on tours

Frequent riders are well equipped with the Marathon Winter. With its 240 metal spikes, the tire claws firmly into the ground and gives the rider excellent control on icy roads. Even while extreme cornering and heavy braking, it is easy to control.

For beginners, there is the spiked tire Winter with K-Guard puncture protection and reflective stripes. Just in time for the cold season Schwalbe brings out three new sizes: the classic Holland bike size 40-635 with 116 spikes and the folding bike sizes 30-349 (Brompton) and 42-355 (Birdy) with 72, respectively 76 metal spikes. Schwalbe's Winter is available in a total of seven sizes.

Mountain biking on ice

The Ice Spiker Pro is the turbo among the spiked tires. Now the folding tire from the exclusive Evolution series is also available in size 27.5 inches. On 378 spikes - per tire! - mountain bikers roll safely over icy slopes. The spike body around the tungsten carbide claws is made of lightweight aluminum, so that the tire remains agile and sprinty with 835 grams.

For the first time, Schwalbe also brings out a wired version of the Ice Spiker Pro in the performance series. With the lightweight RaceGuard protection belt and spikes made of steel, it offers high-quality tire technology in the mid-price segment. Thus, the Ice Spiker Pro is available in all three MTB diameters 26, 27.5 and 29 inches and each in two quality and price categories.

Tip: Minimum pressure in slippery conditions,

maximum pressure in dry weather

The metal pins grip best when the tire is inflated with the minimum pressure. The recommended air pressure is indicated in each case on the tire sidewall.

In dry weather, on the other hand, studded tires should be inflated tightly at the maximum air pressure. Then they roll easily on the road, the metal spikes hardly touch the road, rolling resistance and running noise are minimized. If a spike is ever lost, it can be replaced. For this purpose, there is a practical set of 50 replacement spikes including tools.

Schwalbe products are available from bike shops.
